Mrs. Peepen

I first saw Mrs. Peepen sitting on a hillside along the pond at Callaway Gardens in Georgia.  Her perfect posture, soft smile and graceful manner seemed fitting for the Christmas setting as the Gardens prepared for the first light tour of the evening.  For a short moment I wondered if she was part of the planned ambiance, but soon her daughter appeared by her side and it was clear that they too were awaiting the moment when the tour would begin.

Peepen is not her actual name, but one she seemed a bit smitten with.  Her granddaughter gave it to her and I think you will agree it fits her well.

Virginia Callaway is responsible for the the development of Callaway Garden.  Her desire was to create a place of beauty that connects nature and man.  If you visit there I think you will agree she accomplished her mission.  During the Christmas season the Gardens host a beautiful display of Christmas lights along a mile of winding hills.  Guests make the trek in a open tram that has the feel of a horse drawn sleigh.  Christmas carols are broadcast along the way.  A large pond anchors the facility and is surrounded by specialty foods, a train for the kiddos and a gift store that displays the latest ideas in Christmas decoration.

This magical world provides a festive evening perfect for inspiring the spirit of the season.  On the beach along the pond a lighted nativity invites guests to sit and listen as they tell the story that makes this the perfect season.
